高校の英語科授業で、生徒の英語による発話を促すためのコツ

2018年に改訂された高校学習指導要領では、「英語科の授業は英語で行うことを基本とする」ことが規定されています。一方で、文部科学省の「令和元年度英語教育改善プラン」によると、英語科の授業における、生徒の英語による言語活動時間の割合はおよそ50.8％、英語担当教師の英語による言語活動時間の割合はおよそ51.3％という調査結果が出ています。英語科の授業で生徒も先生も英語をよく使っている、とは言えません。

生徒に英語で話しかけても、Yes.やNo.のような簡単な語で返事をしたり、黙り込んでしまったりするケースがあります。生徒に話しかける時は、返事がしやすいように工夫を凝らして話しかけることが大切です。どのように話しかければよいのか見ていきましょう。

意見を聞く時は、まず先生が自分の意見を述べる

生徒の英語による発話量を増やすために、答えが単調にならないように質問の内容を工夫することが大切です。また、生徒の意見を聞く時は、先に先生が意見を述べると答えやすくなります。

質問例

In the previous lesson, you have read a poem in the fifth lesson, have you? What did you think about that poem? I thought that contained a wish for peace of the poet. Hikaru, how about you?

you have read a poem in the fifth lesson, have you? で止めてしまうと、Yes, I have.のような発話で終わってしまいます。また、What did you think about that poem? と聞くだけでは返事に困って口ごもってしまう生徒もいるでしょう。そのような時は、I thought that contained a wish for peace of the poet. のように先生の意見を示してあげることで答えやすくなります。

先生が出だしの部分を言って生徒の発話を促す

生徒がうまく発話できない時は、I agree to your opinion, or I disagree to your opinion. That is because I think ～.のように、先生が出だし部分を言って、生徒の発話を促してあげます。

質問例

Although we live in Japan peacefully, as you know, there are a lot of nations where wars last endlessly. Tomoko, do you have any ideas to make the world peaceful? This may be a difficult question. For example, one nation fights with another one due to the difference of religion. I think it is important to recognize other religion’s doctrine and respect each other. What do you think about my opinion? Doesn’t that make the world peaceful?

高校生にとって難しい話題を扱う時は、まず先生が意見や考えを述べて、その意見や考えに対してどう思うかを質問するとよいでしょう。

YesやNoで終わるような質問は避ける

生徒の発話がYes.やNo.で終わったり、By train.のように一言で終わったりするような質問はなるべく避けるようにします。生徒が自分の考えや意見を自由に述べられるような質問を投げかけましょう。

次のテキストに対する質問例を挙げます。

Japanese food was added to UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2013. There are some reasons why it was registered as such. First of all, the ingredients of the dishes are very fresh and the taste of each ingredient remains in each dish. Also, Japanese food is healthy enough to live a long life. Third, it shows the cycle of the seasons, which makes people enjoy the meal. Many people in the world visit Japan to eat Japanese food and they take it for granted that Japanese people live long lives.

質問例

Takako, I think Japanese food is cooked with fresh ingredients and it is very healthy as it is written in the text. How about you? What is your opinion about Japanese food?
Hayato, what do you think about the opinion of the people from other countries that Japanese people live long lives because they eat Japanese food?
Mizue, why do you think Japanese food is so healthy?

答えやすい質問で発話を促す

趣味やスポーツなど、生徒が興味を示す話題であれば話も弾むことでしょう。日常会話も比較的簡単な単語だけでコミュニケーションを図ることができるので、生徒の発話を促すにはよいでしょう。ただし、Yes.やNo.で終わるような単調な質問にならないように注意しましょう。

What kinds of games do you want to watch in the Tokyo Olympics? I’m interested in men’s basketball. Mr.Tanaka, you belong to the basketball club, right? How do you think they will be able to get a medal?
I like to visit castles. How about you? For example, Himeji Castle is popular among not only Japanese but also foreign tourists. Miss Sato, why do so many people visit Himeji Castle?
Miss Suzuki, you get a suntan. Did you go anywhere?
You went on a school trip to Hokkaido, but some senior high schools choose foreign countries for school trips. Mr. Adachi, in your opinion, what are the merits of the school trip to foreign countries?
