Part D Reading & Your Opinion

D_1
Next, let’s read about animal sleep patterns.

D_2
Different Animal Sleep Patterns
Animals show a wide range of sleeping styles, and their habits depend on their environments and diets. Koalas sleep for many hours because they eat eucalyptus leaves that contain toxins, and they must usea lot of energy to get rid of them. In contrast to koalas, giraffes rest only for short periods since they have to eat large amounts of food each day. Other large grazing animals also sleep briefly because they need to stay alert to avoid danger. Meat-eating animals sleep longer because their food provides enough nutrition, so they spend less time finding meals. Some marine animals, such as whales and dolphins, cannot stop moving because they need to breathe at the surface. Dolphins show a special sleeping behavior by resting one side of their brain at a time. These differences show how animals adapt to survive.

D_3
Now, please answer the questions based on the passage.
D_4
1. Why do koalas need to expend so much energy in order to sleep safely?
Answer: ________________________________________.
2. How do dolphins continue to breathe while they are sleeping?
Answer: ________________________________________.
3. Which animals sleep only for short periods to avoid danger from predators?
Answer: ________________________________________.

D_5
Let’s express your opinions on today’s topic. Give at least one reason or example to support your opinion. You have one minute to prepare.

D_6
Topic 1: Diet and Productivity
In the reading, we learned that koalas sleep to digest food. Humans also experience the “afternoon slump” (feeling tired after eating).
👉 Question 1:
Just like the koala, do you find that your brain slows down or you feel sleepy after lunch? Does it depend on what or how much you eat?
Answer:
⭕Yes, I get sleepy when I eat __________________________.
❌Not really. I usually have ___________ for lunch, and I stay alert in the afternoon.
👉 Question 2:
Unlike koalas, we cannot sleep during class. Do you have a special way to wake yourself up? If yes, tell me about it. If not, please think of a way you could try.
Answer:
⭕Yes, when I feel sleepy, I try to [action🏃] __________________________ to wake myself up.
Also, to avoid feeling sleepy, I choose [food🍽️] ____________.
❌No, I don’t currently have one.
But I think I should try to __________________________.

🔍 Hint: eating less lunch, stretching, using eye drops, or fixing your posture

D_7
That’s a valuable point. Wonderful job!

D_8
Topic 2: Staying Up Late vs. Sleeping Early
Giraffes sleep very little because they prioritize eating and safety over sleeping. They have a necessary reason to stay awake. How do you usually spend your time at night?
👉 Question 1:
First, tell me about your typical night.
What time do you usually go to bed, and what are you usually doing right before you sleep?
(e.g., studying, using your phone, or playing a game)

👉 Question 2:
Now, evaluate your answer in Step 1.
Is that activity “productive” (a necessary reason to stay awake), or are you just “wasting time”? Please tell me the reason why you think so.

👉 Question:
Think about a busy time, like “exam weeks.” Do you usually sleep less during these times?
If yes, what keeps you awake?
If no, how do you keep your sleep schedule?
