以下の日本語と英語を比べてみましょう。
今日プレゼンテーションをした人を知っています。

日本語では「人」や「本」を説明する部分が前からかかっています。英語では、the personと言ってから、「誰かというと…」という感じでwho…を足しています。the bookと言ってから、「どれかというと…」という感じでwhich…を足しています。
「人」の場合はwhoで、「もの・こと」の場合はwhichで情報を足すことができます。

上の2つの例文で、whoとwhichのかわりにthatを使うこともできます(文全体の意味は変わりません)。名詞から後ろの部分だけ注目してみましょう。

このthatは前の名詞を受けて、「それは…」という感じで、情報を追加するはたらきがあります。
上で説明したwho, which, thatは「関係代名詞」と呼ばれています。
