Canoe
The Hokule’a traveled to Japan from Hawaii. Its crew members were divided into three teams. They took turns on steering the canoe which was their most important task. Uchino was one of the crew members. Their team worked from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m.
As they ended their trip in Yokohama on June 9, 2007, she gained deeper appreciation and understanding of nature. She realized that nature provides everything that humans need. And for humans to enjoy the gifts of nature, they must learn how nature works.
Uchino also mentioned that a canoe is like the planet Earth. We must raise questions and figure out what is our role as crew members of the “canoe”. Where do we want to go? Do we value our “canoe”? Humans are part of nature, both are connected to each other. If we work together with nature, we can make Earth more beautiful and a better place to live.
