Taisho (大暑)“Taisho” is known to be the hottest day of the year in Japan.
It’s on July 23 this year.
Many people do “Uchimizu” which is sprinkling water on the ground or on the street to lessen the heat.
A number of studies proved that the temperature did fall for about 1-2℃, thereafter.“Taisho” is also known as “Tempura Day”.
Nobody knows when the trend has started, but oddly enough, many people eat tempura to overcome the blistering weather.For the odd same reason, people eat eels on “Ushi no hi” which is held on July 25.
Eels make for delicious meals in summer.
These customs have been observed since 1772.
People have worked out these ideas to survive the intense heat. -
