Clay Tan: Universal Solutions Inc. CEO
by Cris Brickston

Clay Tan is one of the youngest CEOs in the pharmaceutical industry. Tan’s leadership is responsible for the development of Universal Solutions Inc., which has a net worth of $95 million. Employees look up to Tan not because of his position, but because of his management style. Tan runs his business as if it were a start-up.

Regardless of their rank, he communicates with every one of his subordinates. On occasion, he attends meetings with rank-and-file to do bottom-up problem solving. When compared to start-ups, interaction is less structured. At Universal Solutions Inc., communication is occasionally casual.

Tan also prioritizes communication with his coworkers. He is transparent and honest about the company’s current situation, future initiatives, and any necessary course corrections to meet industry demands. He is opposed to the idea of ranking. Despite the organization’s many levels and job titles, there is no pecking order.
