Hi, Emma. What are you reading?
Oh, this? It’s a culture magazine.
I’m reading a guide on Buddhist temples and Shinto shrines in Japan.

How are they different?
Well, a Shinto shrine is a place of worship for the honored “kami,”
the deities of Shinto.

How about the temples?
A Buddhist temple, on the other hand, is dedicated to a Buddhist deity.

I see. What do Japanese people do when they visit?
They usually put a coin in an offering box and pray quietly.
They also purchase “omamori,” which are charms for protection.

Are tourists welcomed there?
Of course. Everyone can visit regardless of personal beliefs.
But we all should behave respectfully.
