Facility Dog

video

There was a dog that had worked as a medical staff member at a hospital. He visited and helped the children relax. He also joined them in walking and exercise therapy. He had worked full-time at this hospital since 2012 as a facility dog.

How did he become a facility dog? First, he received different types of training. Second, he worked on a trial basis at a children’s hospital.

In his eight years of service, he had supported 3,000 children. He retired as a hospital dog on October 16, 2018.

Only a few hospitals in Japan have facility dogs. The main reason is the expensive cost. However, facility dogs play an important role as medical helpers in patient and family care. What can we do to find a solution?
