Part B_2 Passage reading
The Power of Art
In 2011, I joined a volunteer organization in Sendai to help children. They were bored after the earthquake and tsunami. We painted the school’s walls. Though I had some worries about the project’s usefulness, I didn’t want to believe art was powerless in the face of disaster.
In 2017, I was in Mariupol, Ukraine. It was a highly dangerous location. A war was going on there. Every day, people were dying. An art project was not safe in Mariupol. But to my surprise, kids started joining me as soon as I started painting. We painted a big mitten. The concept is based on The Magic Mitten, a well-known Ukrainian tale. In the tale, an old man drops his mitten on a snowy night. Many animals climb into the mitten to stay warm. Our artwork shows how people can open up their hope and bring peaceful lives to us.
I’m still not sure how to answer the question: Who am I, as a person and as an artist? But it’s become clear that my art has the ability to make people super happy.
