Part B_2 Passage reading
A Lost Friend
When a British ship arrived at Easter Island in 1868, the story began. The crew saw a hillside covered in huge statues. There was one smaller statue among the destroyed ones, approximately 2.4 meters tall and in excellent condition. The statue was taken from the islanders by the sailors. They delivered it to England to give it to Queen Victoria, who then gave it to the British Museum. It is known as Hoa Hakananai’a, Rapa Nui words that are translated as “Lost Friend.”

When the Rapa Nui people took back control of their land in 2017, one of their initial actions was to return Höa Hakananai’a to Easter Island. They organized a delegation to ask the British Museum to return their missing friend.

The Rapa Nui delegation landed in London in November 2018 to search for Hoa Hakananai’a. They went straight to the British Museum. They were deeply moved when they found him. “For them, he represents the living soul of the island.”

Legend says that when eyes made of bright stones and coral are inserted, the moai come to life.
