Part B_2 Passage reading
A Lost Friend
The moai had indeed been taken away without the islanders’ permission. So why did the museum not agree to return it right away?

From the museum’s point of view, there are good reasons to keep the statue. Easter Island does not have the security and controlled environmental conditions that the British Museum has. So the statue is safer in London. Many people and scholars have easier access to the statue.

The real reason the museum refuses to return the Lost Friend, according to critics, is quite different. The museum has many more artwork taken without permission from all over the world. If the museum returns the Lost Friend, it will have to return the others as well.

Who owns works of art that are hundreds or even thousands of years old? One can argue that great artwork belongs to the entire world and should be on display in areas where people can safely appreciate it.
However, for the Rapa Nui people, the simple human desire to bring home a lost friend or family member is more important.
