Can you imagine why we call the two ends of a magnet “north pole” and “south pole”? This comes from the use of a magnet as a compass. A compass is used when you want to know in what direction you are moving. A compass shows you the direction as one end of the compass needle points to the north. This happens because that end of the needle is attracted by the North Pole of the earth. Do you understand what this means? It means that the earth is like one huge magnet!
