Japanese festivals are popular all over the world. In fact, many foreign and local people have been joining them for years now. A student from Canada visited Japan to do an interview for his research on traditional festivals. During his stay in Japan, he was able to join the Nebuta Festival. He interviewed several local people and asked them about festival items and costumes. He also asked them, “What is the origin of the Nebuta Festival?” He learned that the origin of the Nebuta Festival is the Tanabata Festival and Tsugaru region’s traditions. “What is the festival famous for?”, he curiously asked. They told him that it is famous for its huge floats. He also had an opportunity to meet a local person who builds floats. “How much time do you spend in building a float?”, he asked. The local person answered, “We usually spend an entire year building a float.” The local person also shared that they compete with each other by building floats. The group with the best float wins a prize.
