Today, a lot of countries such as France continue to display ukiyo-e in many museums which still attracts more and more people. Ukiyo-e and other Japanese art forms started gaining popularity in the late nineteenth century when an unexpected growth in Japanese pictorial art made Japonism, a new art movement, possible. Van Gogh and Monet were two of the many artists who took an interest in ukiyo-e.
Meanwhile, a lot of Japanese people were surprised at how ukiyo-e gained so much popularity in many European countries. In Edo Japan, ukiyo-e were considered less as works of art. For them, it is just an ordinary part of their everyday life.
