Gaudi and His Messenger

The world-famous church in Barcelona, Spain, the Sagrada Familia, has been under construction for more than a century since 1882. Antonio Gaudi designed the church, but he did not stick to the original plan and changed the model drastically. Gaudi had poor health as a child and spent most of his childhood observing nature around him instead of playing outside. This experience had a great influence on his art.

Gaudi devoted the latter half of his life to Sagrada Familia’s construction and wanted to create a structurally perfect and beautiful church. His designs and models, however, were no longer used in construction after his death because they were destroyed during the Spanish Civil War. Gaudi’s students instead drew the designs based on what they heard from him.

Seven of Gaudi’s works were declared World Heritage Sites by UNESCO between 1984 and 2005. Among them was “The Nativity Facade,” which was completed in 2000 with a sculpture of 15 angels by the Japanese sculptor Etsuro Sotoo. He has been working on the Sagrada Familia for more than 40 years. According to Sotoo, “Gaudi was happy when he spent his younger days surrounded by nature. Therefore, he thought nature could make us happy.” With Gaudi’s will in mind, Sotoo and his colleagues continue to carve stone in Barcelona.
