A Hero in a War
The Nazis invaded Poland in 1933 and took over the country. All Jewish people were forced to live in a certain area of the city known as ghettos. They were forbidden to leave ghettos, and anyone who tried to escape was killed. They suffered from hunger and got infected by different diseases. Because of that, social workers were assigned to monitor the situation. However, they were not allowed to help the Jewish people.
Irena Sendler, one of the social workers, helped the Jewish children escape. She knew the risk but could not bear seeing them suffering. She and other social workers decided to take the children out of the ghettos secretly. Some of the children were hidden in a box or bag. Others were put under a pile of clothes and vegetables. Irena was able to save 2,500 children. They were adopted by Polish families and were given false identities. However, a few years later, Senler got caught and was asked questions about the Jewish children. She kept her mouth shut despite all the sufferings she went through. In the end, she was able to escape with the help of her friends. After all the good things she did, she never considered herself a hero.
