The Springboks

For the majority of people in the world, the 1995 Rugby World Cup final in South Africa was one of the most exciting international matches. But it meant more than that to South Africans. People had long faced discrimination in South Africa under the apartheid system. Nelson Mandela led a group of people who did not like this system. However, he was held in captivity in a small cell for 27 years until he was finally freed in 1990.
In 1994, Mandela was elected president, and apartheid was abolished. But there was still a conflict between black and white people. Mandela believed that sports may help overcome this problem by unifying people. The Springboks, a South African rugby team, were welcomed by the black prisoners there after visiting Mandela’s cell.
The atmosphere gradually changed as the team achieved one victory after another. More and more people began to wave South Africa’s national flag, which meant the end of apartheid.
