PART B_2
Antipersonnel mines
Antipersonnel mines are planted under the ground and explode when they are stepped on. They were invented to kill and injure people during the war. Many of their victims suffered to death or live in misery.
Mines remain active for a very long time. In fact, they can last even a century. There were about 50 million mines found in 2001. Because of that, the government, together with some NGOs, has been making an effort to remove them without harming anyone.
In 1999, more than 150 countries have signed the Ottawa Treaty. Their goal is to end the use of antipersonnel mines. The clearing operation requires a large number of people to work together to turn it into a success.
Hirose Shigeo published a research paper in 1996 that talks about mine-removing robots. Since 1990, he has been helping in removing mines with the use of the robots he created. The first robot he developed was called Titan X. It is expected to locate and remove mines with its four legs that can walk around rocks. Meanwhile, Hirose has been developing a snake-type robot that would help find mines by going through bushes without any pressure so that mines would not explode.
