PART B_2

Android robots
A theater play called Sayonara features an android actress. In the story, the young girl is suffering from a serious disease that is why her family hired an android to keep her company. The viewers are aware that one of the actors is an android and that is being controlled by another actor. However, it looks as if it is real, so they almost forget that it was just an android.
Ishiguro Hiroshi is the great mind behind this invention. He always wanted to become an artist ever since he was a high school student and started building robots in his early 30’s. His first android was modeled on his four-year-old daughter, while his second android was built for an exhibition. Many people could not recognize that it was a robot because it looks so real. He had also created an android that was a copy of himself and speaks with his voice.
This type of robot has the ability to have a natural conversation with humans. However, not all people feel comfortable with it. In fact, some people find it “creepy”. According to Ishiguro, this creepiness is called the “uncanny valley” which he is trying to cross over to bridge the gap between robots and humans.
