Driver-assistance technology will gradually spread over the next few years. Fully autonomous cars will most likely become a reality, but this will make existing cars look as old-fashioned as steam engines.

An example can be witnessed in Heathrow Airport’s “pod parking” area. It transfers passengers between the car park and terminal, done by driverless electric pods moving on roadways above the street. You can summon a pod using a touchscreen kiosk. It then drives you to your destination, avoiding other pods in the process, and parks itself neatly when you arrive.

94% of recorded car accidents are due to human error, such as overspeeding and interruptions. Driverless cars cannot break the speed limit or get interrupted by text messages, so accidents should occur less often. A new study shows that if 90% of American roads were autonomous, the number of accidents would fall from 5.5 million to 1.3 million a year.
