PART B_2

Aside from being safer than normal cars, self-driving vehicles would make traffic flow more smoothly. They would not brake unpredictably, could be routed to avoid crowded roads, and could travel close together. These factors would increase road capacity.

Researchers of the University of Texas estimate that if 90% of cars in the US were self-driving, it would be equivalent to a doubling of road capacity. Moreover, delays would be cut by 60% on motorways and 15% on suburban roads. Productivity gains would be worth 1.3% trillion a year in the US alone, and $5.6 million worldwide. With cars in constant use, much less parking space would be needed. Autonomous vehicles would allow more people to live in city centers; however, they would also make it easier for workers to live farther out.

In a future without drivers, people will come to wonder why they tolerated high rates of road accidents and why they spent so much money on machines that are barely sat on. Self-driving cars may seem strange now, but future generations may look back on the age of car ownership as much stranger.
