PART B_2
Have you ever heard of a “quagga”? Perhaps not, but you may have seen a zebra before. The quagga was a member of the zebra family. They are brownish with white stripes around their necks and the front parts of their bodies. It is often said that quaggas looked like “zebras which had forgotten to put on their pajama pants.” They lived in Southern Africa; unfortunately, they went extinct in the 19th century due to overhunting.

However, some researchers have tried to “revive” the quagga. Due to their attractive stripe pattern, these animals have attracted the attention of those interested in animal conservation. They have conducted the Quagga Project in South Africa for over thirty years, and the researchers discovered that zebras are genetically close to the quagga. In this project, the researchers have attempted to selectively breed plain zebras with fewer stripes and have similarities to the quagga. The baby zebras born to quagga-like parents looked more like the actual quagga but with a reduced number of stripes.

The project has achieved success by producing baby zebras that have a striking resemblance to the quagga.
