Should we be happy with the “revival” of the quagga? The new generation of zebras is indeed visually impressive, but they resemble the quagga only in appearance. Zebras are still genetically different from the quaggas. And the more we look at the young and adorable quagga-like zebras, the more we are reminded of the sad truth that the quagga died out because we abused nature.
Does the project help restore nature, or is it only for self-satisfaction for humans to get rid of their guilt? Notably, people are interested in the quagga because of how visually appealing they are. Hence, good-looking endangered animals attract more attention and money from people than plain-looking ones that are often ignored.
This shows that human beings are biased towards beauty standards, even when it comes to environmental causes.
