PART B_2

Building robots
Ishiguro Hiroshi believes that there are two steps in creating robots that look like real humans. The first step is by capturing the typical characteristics of humans such as their expressions and body movements. The second step is by having a remote-control machine that would transfer human speech and movements to the robot.
Ishiguro sometimes sends his Geminoid HI to conferences abroad alone. He usually stays in Japan and controls it by using his computer. When it speaks, listeners feel as if he is really there. He has been working hard to build android robots to discover what it means to be human. It has also taught him interesting things such as how human brains work. For instance, the operator feels whenever someone touches the android.
Meanwhile, there are many other teams that have been creating robots such as the team from Osaka University. They have created a robot that reacts to different kinds of touch. For example, it quickly moves out of the way the second it feels that someone is about to slap it. Another person who builds a robot is Takahashi Tomotaka. He built a robot named Kirobo that was sent into space as a conversation partner for an astronaut. The robot had the ability to listen and answer questions.
