PART B_2

The science of life
Biology is the study of living things. Its name comes from the Greek words “bios” which means life, and “logos” which means study. Biology aims to understand the structure, function, and origin of all living things.
Up to this day, it is still a question when and how the study of biology began. However, it is believed that early humans had knowledge of animals and plants around them as they were significant for human survival.
Biology is divided into different branches. Some of which are anatomy, botany, and ecology. Anatomy deals with the structure and parts of living things. It is divided into three areas. The first one is the human anatomy which is responsible for the human body and its structure. Second, zootomy which focuses on the structures of the animals. The last one is phytotomy which deals with the internal structures of plants.
Meanwhile, botany is the scientific study of plants. It includes its structure, properties, types, and environmental impact. Theophrastus, a Greek philosopher, is considered as the father of botany.
On the other hand, zoology which is also known as animal science is responsible for the study of animal life. A Greek philosopher named Aristotle is considered to be the first to practice scientific zoology.
Biology is important not only to humans but to all other living things. It helps people understand their surroundings and how they are connected with one another. In addition to that, it provides a significant contribution to sustain human life and the environment.
