PART B_2

High-income economy
Singapore is an island city-state located in southern Malaysia which is ranked as one of the world’s most competitive economies. However, 50 years ago, the country was a low-income economy that faced severe unemployment, poor buildings, and a housing shortage. Still, it was able to rapidly develop into a high-income economy after independence. The country has a gross national income of $52,530 per capita as of the year 2017, one of the highest in the world.
The main reason for their economic growth was the manufacturing industry. Singapore reached full employment and was ranked the same as Hong Kong, South Korea, and Taiwan in the early days of the 1970s. The manufacturing and services industry has remained to be the main factor of the country’s high value-added economy.
In 2018, the overall growth of the county’s economy was 3.2%. The electronics and precision engineering sectors are still the main keys to economic growth. Meanwhile, the services sector also grew 6% each year, particularly the information and communication sector. In addition to that, the finance and insurance industries also grew by 5.9% year-on-year.
The World Bank Human Capital Index ranks Singapore as the best country in the world in human capital development. This means that children born today and over the next few years in Singapore would be 88% productive when they grow up provided that they will be given the right to proper education and health benefits.
