Tips for beginner drivers
Keeping new drivers safe when they are learning how to drive is a matter of experience. Experts say that letting new drivers drive more often helps them be better drivers in the future.
An assistant professor, who works in the John Hopkins University School of Public Health Center for Injury Research and Policy named Johnathon Ehsani, presented a project where 90 families agreed to have their cars installed with microphones and video cameras with data recorders. They recorded from the year the new drivers started to learn driving until one year after they received their licenses. During their first year, the project showed that half of the new drivers had crashed their cars and experienced minor accidents. The project made a way for researchers to look for answers to decrease the crash rate on the new drivers’ first year. They also investigated on the instructions given to new drivers, however, it seemed like the new drivers learned more through their experience driving on different road conditions rather than just listening to instructions. Practicing safe driving in different environment settings helps more than driving in common places. Dr. Ehsani said it will also benefit new drivers since they will probably drive to new places and be independent after getting their licenses. Trying different routes when learning how to drive is an effective way to build experiences that can be used by new drivers to solve problems once they drive independently.
In conclusion, the most effective way for new drivers to learn better and maintain safe driving is through frequent practice. Experience is needed for new drivers to develop good judgement when driving.
