Unexpected but Deserved

video

The World Food Programme (WFP) has won the Nobel Peace Prize for its fight to end world hunger. The organization helped approximately 100 million starving people. In 2020, however, the number had expanded to around 135 million, mostly due to the pandemic. The WFP warns that the number could rise further. Executive Director David Beasley has discussed a potential famine around the world before the year ends.

Winning the Nobel Peace Prize was unexpected, but the committee justified its decision by drawing a clear link between hunger and war. They explained that one issue cannot be solved without solving the other. “Whether it’s war, conflict, climate extremes, it doesn’t matter. The WFP family is out there, and they deserve this award.” Beasley says.

The Nobel committee also wants the world to turn its attention to hunger issues. Additionally, the WFP is being honored for setting an example of how countries should work together to solve the world’s big problems. The committee stated during the opening ceremony in Oslo, Norway: “World unity and cooperation are as great as ever.”
