No Age Barrier
Artificial intelligence and robotics are changing the lifestyle in Japan due to its population’s rapid change. At the University of Tokyo, people can take classes in virtual reality (VR) facilitated by tech-savvy seniors.

Most students in the class are adults and the elderly, ranging from 53 (the youngest) to 90-year-olds (the oldest). They create 360-degree videos to show virtual reality to some elderly patients who cannot travel like they used to. Takeshi Maki, 82, is one of the students who traveled to Hawaii using a 360-degree camera. Kenta Toshima from the Research Center for Advanced Science and Technology in the university used VR in his previous job as a therapist to help Japan’s aging population find hope and joy. Kenta said that using the device takes 80 and 90-year-olds to different places “right before their eyes.” They feel excited, and some patients who do not normally stand up start walking.

Toshima teamed up with the University of Tokyo’s assistant professor Hiyama Atsushi, whose research is mainly focused on implementing technology to support Japan’s hyperaged society. “Even if our physical condition gets lower, by use of virtual reality and an internet connection we can travel around in a virtual way and we can still work and contribute to the society,” Hiyama said.
