Labor Pains
International Women’s Day exists to celebrate and empower women’s rights. However, even if the US takes the role of a leader in some areas, it is the only industrialized nation to not have a paid family leave. Having no guarantee of paid maternity leave is indeed a huge problem for new mothers.

Lauren Hoffman is one of the many American mothers who took an eight-week maternity leave. She feels compelled to return to work shortly after giving birth. Non-profit magazine In These Times released in their 2015 issue the analyzed data from the Department of Labor that shows that nearly a quarter of new mothers reported back to work two weeks after giving birth due to limited paid leave. According to Hoffman, the Family and Medical Leave Act allows new parents to take up to 12 weeks off, but it does not require one’s employer to pay for that period.

New mothers feel anxiety and guilt leaving their babies to return to work after giving birth. “There will be moments where you might want to cry. Let yourself cry, but know that even though new motherhood is probably the hardest job on the planet, it is absolutely worth it,” Hoffman says.
