Wild singing dogs, spotted after 50 years of extinction
After 50 years of extinction, ancient wild dogs which are known for producing sounds similar to singing have been spotted by experts in New Guinea. This dog breed originated in New Guinea which is the second-largest island in the world.
Experts assumed that the said species had died out in the 1970s. This dog breed was initially examined in 1897. It became popular for being the only breed that can make pleasant sounds comparable to wolf howls and whale singing.
After a series of genetic tests carried out by scientists, it was confirmed that the New Guinea singing dogs are closely related to the wild dogs spotted in the same area recently. These wild dogs are viewed as the most ancient dog-like animal to exist.
It is estimated that approximately 200 to 300 New Guinea dogs are kept in zoos and other animal protective facilities. While, 15 highland wild dogs were observed within a mountainous area in Papua, Indonesia.
