Netherlands Museum Opens Its Secrets to the Public
Paintings and other works of art seen in museums around the world make up only a limited portion of their overall collections. The majority of what museums have is kept hidden from view at all times. In the Netherlands, one art gallery is attempting to alter that. Sjarel Ex is the director of Rotterdam’s Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen. He recently showed The Associated Press (AP) and other media the museum’s current depot or storage area. When it opens to the public next year, the structure is expected to house 151,000 works of art. Some of these works have yet to be made publically available and exhibited. The old storage space was once in danger of flooding that could have damaged the artworks greatly. This was one of the reasons that prompted the project. The depot’s 39.5-meter height is enhanced with 1,664 bright and shiny mirrors. They represent the local scenery as well as the city’s tall structures. Visitors shall find five different climates, carefully designed for the safety of each artwork.
