New Film Explores FBI’s Secret Effort Against Martin Luther King Jr.
American civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. has a popular photograph sitting on a public bus in Montgomery, Alabama. King and other activists organized a bus boycott in New York City in 1956. Laws limiting Black bus riders were repealed as a result of the protest. He was joined by another civil rights activist, sitting in the front row of the bus in this shot. King seems to be lost in thought as he gazes out the window. It was a victorious moment, but it was also early in the fight for African-American equality. The photograph of King, as well as many others, was taken by Ernest Withers. Withers was a crucial player in the civil rights movement’s documentation. He also served as an agent for the Federal Bureau of Investigation in the United States (FBI). MLK/FBI, a recent documentary film, tells the story of how the FBI found someone close to King to keep an eye on him and report on him. The film, directed by Sam Pollard, portrays how the two main characters become rivals. Former FBI Director James Comey said that the movement against King “represents the darkest part of the Bureau’s history.”
