Norwegian Museum Solves the Mystery of ‘The Scream’
Norweigan painter Edvard Munch wrote the sentence found on his 1893 painting “The Scream”, Norway’s National Museum reported. The iconic painting portrays a figure with its mouth wide open, holding its head between its paws. It has become a worldwide metaphor for the manifestation of human fear and concern. A phrase that says “can only have been painted by a madman,” was scribbled in the upper left-hand corner of the artwork using a pencil. According to Mai Britt Guleng, head of the National Museum, the inscription was most likely done in 1895 when Munch exhibited the painting for the first time. Many people speculated about Munch’s emotional condition at the time of the painting’s first exhibition. A young medical student doubted Munch’s mental state and said his performance showed he was not sound at a discussion night where the artist was present. The art piece is being planned for exhibition at Norway’s upcoming National Museum, which is scheduled to open in Oslo in 2022.
