Remains from Mass Grave in Japan Suggest Epidemic in 1800s
In western Japan, archaeologists discovered the bodies of over 1,500 individuals. Archaeologists reported evidence that many of those people died of a possible epidemic. The remains were examined by officials from Osaka City Cultural Properties Association, and they estimated that most of the victims were in their 30s or were young children when they died. Some scholars believe the disease may have been caused by syphilis, which was common in populated areas at the time. The work area has been cleared of all remains; however, experts plan to study them as well as other things in order to learn more about the deaths. By the end of next year, researchers hope to provide a publication with their conclusions. The cemetery is believed to have been founded in the 1850s and is being excavated for a renovation project in Osaka. It is located near the city’s iconic Osaka Castle, in what used to be a farming district. It was one of the city’s seven largest cemeteries.
