Vietnamese Mark Lunar New Year with Traditional Fish Release
Vietnam started its preparations for the Lunar New Year with a fish release a week before the Tet holiday formally starts. The practice entails releasing carp into rivers and lakes throughout the country. The ritual derives from an old legend concerning three “Kitchen Gods.” At the end of the year, the three (two males and a female) take a spin on the brightly colored carp. They fly to Heaven to meet with the God who rules there, the Jade Emperor. The Kitchen Gods bring news of the families they serve to the Emperor to obtain his care and safety. Their contributions help families remain happy and safe by keeping the kitchen fires going. Vietnamese believe that releasing the fish attracts good fortune to their families. They sweep their dwellings while the gods rise to Heaven in readiness for Tet and claim that keeping their homes tidy will bring them prosperity in the coming year. The gods will also return to earth with their missions in the kitchen of the house on Lunar New Year’s Eve.
