canを使って、何かを「することができる（可能だ）」という表現をしてみましょう。

I can play the ukulele.(ウクレレを弾くことができます）のように、能力的に可能なときには「～できる」となります。
You can sit here.（ここに座っていいですよ）のように、許可によって何かが可能となる場合には、「～してもよい」となります。
canは助動詞の１つで、「主語＋can＋原形」のように、主語の後に入れて使います。

否定文では、I cannot [can’t] eat avocado.（私はアボカドが食べられません）のように、canの後にnotをつけて、cannotまたはcan’tを使います。

例文：

“I can play the ukulele.”

「ウクレレを弾くことができます。」

“I can’t eat avocado.”

「私はアボカドを食べることができません。」
