be動詞とは「is/am/are」のことで、「～です/～があります（います）」という意味がありますが、
be動詞の過去形は、「was/were」で、「～でした/～がありました（いました）」という意味になります。

例文：

“Where were you yesterday?” – “I was at home yesterday.”

「昨日どこにいましたか？」－「昨日は家にいました。」

“It was hot yesterday.”

「昨日は暑かったです。」
