「私があなたなら、そうしないでしょう」は英語でどう言うのでしょうか。
If I were you, I wouldn’t do that.
といいます。
英語では、If I am youとは決して言いません。
事実と異なる仮想の話をするときには、時制を過去にズラすというルールがあるからです(wouldもwillの過去形です)。
これを仮定法過去と呼びます。
「過去」と呼ぶのは過去形を使っているためで、文の内容としては、現在の仮想の状況を示しているという理解が大切です。
If+主語+動詞の過去形, 主語+would(could, might, should)+動詞の原形
(もし(現在)~なら、…するのに)
例文:
“If I were you, I would not say something like that to her.”
「私があなただったら、そんなことを彼女には言わないだろう。」
“If I were the president, I would build many houses for the poor.”
もし大統領だったら、貧しい人々のためにたくさんの家を建てます。」
