「~したい」というとき、 want to go with you.(君と一緒に行きたい)のように、want to doで表現できます。このような願望を丁寧に表現したいときに、want to doのかわりにwould like to doを使うことができます。
wouldは助動詞willの過去形ですが、would like toは過去のことを表すのではなく、一歩引いた感覚で丁寧に、主語の願望を表します。目上の人や心理的に距離感のある(親密なわけではない)相手に対してよく使われます。
