高校の英語授業にShow & Tellを取り入れよう
高校生の英語による「聞く」力と「話す」力を身に付けるための学習方法の1つに、Show & Tell があります。Show & Tell とは、写真や音楽CDなど、生徒自身が気に入っているものをクラスメートに見せて、英語を使って紹介したり、思いを発表したりすることです。
高校の英語授業に Show & Tell を取り入れることで、生徒の英語による話す力や表現力のアップを図ることができます。Show & Tell が終わったら、生徒同士で英語によるやり取りを行わせることで、聞く力や即興でやり取りする力も養うことができます。Show & Tell を取り入れた授業の進め方を見ていきましょう。

Show ＆ Tell のテーマを決める
Show ＆ Tell では、テーマを決めることが大切です。「関係代名詞を1つ以上使おう」「今日学習した語彙を1つ以上入れよう」「中学校時代の思い出の品物について発表しよう」など、毎回テーマを変えて課題を与えるとよいでしょう。
英語の授業で初めて Show & Tell を取り入れる時は、まず先生が手本として示して、どんなことを発表すればよいのかを把握させます。下の例文は、「仮定法過去形や関係副詞を用いる」というテーマで作成した英文です。

This is my own car. If I didn’t have this car, I couldn’t come to school.
I live in a town where the nearest station is at a distance of more than five kilometers and to make matters worse, there is no public transportation system such as buses, subways.
You may wonder why I wouldn’t move to more convenient area.
I have a reason.
My wife wanted to live in a quiet area and we built a house there three months ago.
We can’t afford to have other house or rent an apartment near the station.
And we want to live in the new house which we built for ourselves.
That’s why this car is a must for me.
Show & Tell での発表時間は1分から1分30秒程度
Show ＆ Tell の準備は、自宅学習を活用します。あらかじめ Show & Tell のテーマを伝えておき、自宅において見せる品物を用意させ、発表用の英文を作成させます。Show ＆ Tell での発表時間は、1分から1分30秒程度がよいでしょう。Show ＆ Tell では、英文を見ないで発表するので、自宅で暗記してくるようにも伝えます。Show ＆ Tell の準備をすることで、英語の書く力や読む力の向上を図ることもできます。
英語の授業では、生徒に Show ＆ Tell による発表会を行います。Show ＆ Tell が終わったら、生徒同士で英語による質疑応答（やり取り）を行います。

テーマ：完了形を使ってみよう

Look at this kimono-clad girl.
She is an American senior high school student whose name is Anne.
She is one of my best friends.
She came to Japan last year and she stayed with my family for a year.
She has gone back to the USA.
Since she wants to learn Japanese and Japanese culture, she will come back to Japan to go to a university next year.
According to her e-mail, she continues to learn Japanese.
When she comes back to Japan next year, she will have been a good Japanese speaker.
I’m going to study English hard to surprise her, too.
I’m looking forward to seeing her in Japan next year.

質問者A：Which language did you use to speak with Anne, English or Japanese while she stayed in your home?
発表者：Since she wants to speak Japanese, we used Japanese. But when she didn’t understand what I said, I used English.
質問者B：Is the kimono Anne wore yours? It looks so beautiful.
発表者：I’m very glad to hear that. Yes, this kimono is mine.
質問者C：I think Japanese culture is very abstract and difficult. Are you interested in Japanese culture?
発表者：Yes, I’m interested in Japanese culture. As you said, it is very abstract, however, because it is completely different from western one, I love it.
発表する生徒は、英語による話す力や人前で発表する力を養うことができます。発表を聞いている生徒は、聞く力をアップすることができます。Show ＆ Tell 後のやり取りによって、英語による即興で話す力も付きます。オンライン英会話に Show & Tell を取り入れるのもおすすめです。
テーマ：to不定詞と動名詞を使い分けながら発表しよう

This is a plastic model of an airplane made by myself.
When I was six years old, my parents took me to Narita Airport.
I remember seeing a lot of airplanes from various countries.
First of all, what I wanted to do was to go to other countries by those planes.
It must have been the beginning of longing for airplanes.
After that I often asked my parents to take me to Narita Airport to see airplanes.
At the age of eight, I dreamed of becoming a pilot and it lasts until now.
Every time I see this plastic model of an airplane, it offers motivation for my dream.

テーマ：比較級を使ってみよう

This is a glove autographed by a famous baseball player, Hideki Matsui.
While I lived in New York with my parents.
I used to go to Yankee Stadium to support New York Yankees.
Watching baseball games in the stadium is more exciting than watching them on television.
One day, on my way home from the stadium, I happened to meet Hideki Matsui, and I asked him to sign his autograph on my own glove.
He must have been tired, but he was willing to do that.
He was much bigger than I expected.
I couldn’t be happier.
I respect him so much.
I belong to a baseball club now and I use this glove every day.
I really want to be a baseball player like Hideki Matsui.

Show & Tell による生徒への評価
Show & Tell が一通り終わったら、生徒への評価を行います。評価の方法としてはCAN-DOリストがおすすめです。

Show & Tell とプレゼンテーション、スピーチの違い
Show & Tell もプレゼンテーションも、手に何かを持って話をしたり、資料を示しながら説明したりすることは同じです。しかし、発表時間が異なります。Show & Tell では1分から1分30秒程度であるのに対して、プレゼンテーションでは10分から30分程度です。一方、スピーチの場合は手に何かを持って話すことはありません。
