In 1979, about 40 years ago, a Japanese boy was in Los Angeles. He hardly understood English, but he was so excited because his dream has finally come true. His dream was to travel the world by bicycle. So, he had planned his trip for 5 years. While he was planning, everyone stopped him. They said his dream was silly and they believed he would not succeed. But he believed that success depends on one’s attitude. His parents believed in him. They listened to him and they thought that making his dream happen was a good way to be independent. Making money on his own was also part of being independent. He had 3 part-time jobs to prepare for his dream. When he was 16 years old, everything was ready.
When he arrived in Los Angeles, he met Dennis, a key person to his travel. At first, Dennis was surprised that a Japanese boy was trying to travel 4,500 kilometers by bicycle. But he did not stop the boy like the others. He gave the boy a directory to serve as a guide. The Japanese boy visited some people who are on the directory and he was welcomed warmly. He thanked Dennis because he became a huge part of his travel.

PART B_2

It is true that some people are falsely accused. They are in prison because of what they did not do. In fact, a lot of people have been dealing with this issue for a long time.
One of the famous cases is Sacco and Vanzetti. The two men were falsely accused of robbery and murder that happened in South Braintree in 1920. They had worked for more than 10 years in the US. They were also accused of another affair that happened in Bridgewater in the past. There were 16 witnesses that can prove Sacco did not rob anything and kill anyone. But the death sentence was handed down to him.
Why did it happen? To put it briefly, it happened because of people’s one-sided view. First, Sacco and Vanzetti were immigrants. The economy and business were not steady in the US at that time. There were a lot of people who needed a job. Majority of the Americans believed that there were few available jobs for them because jobs were taken by immigrants like Sacco and Vanzetti. Secondly, they disagree with Sacco and Vanzetti’s political idea. During those days, the US government was aware of anarchy and they paid attention closely to the two men.

PART B_2

A false charge is when a person is judged guilty in court for a crime he or she did not commit. People have been dealing with this issue for a long time. In many cases, people’s prejudices cause false charges. Sacco and Vanzetti’s case is one of the most famous cases of false charges caused by prejudices.
Sacco and Vanzetti had worked for more than 10 years in the US as immigrants. In 1920, the two immigrants’ lives changed. They were arrested for robbery and murder that happened in South Braintree. After that, they were accused of another affair that happened in Bridgewater in the past. There were 16 witnesses that could prove Sacco was not related to the affair. And Vanzetti was able to prove that he was at work when the affair happened. In spite of this, the death sentence was handed down to them.
Why did this happen? To put it briefly, it happened because of people’s prejudices. First, Sacco and Vanzetti were immigrants. When they moved to the US from Italy, the economy and businesses were not steady in the US. There were a lot of people who needed jobs. Majority of Americans believed that there were only a few available jobs because most jobs were already taken by immigrants. This is why most Americans were against immigration. Secondly, people had a prejudice about the two men’s political beliefs. Sacco and Vanzetti supported anarchism. Those days, the US government considered anarchism dangerous, so they closely paid attention to the two immigrants.

Culture Shock
Culture shock is a feeling that a person experiences when facing something that is totally different from what he or she is used to. Students who study abroad are likely to get culture shock. Almost all of them go through the same experiences.
In the first few weeks, they are amazed by the new place. They believe the culture there is much better. But after a few months, this is when things get challenging. They have been used to their new habits, so they find troubles such as using a different language and getting used to dealing with the people around them. At this time, most of them start to miss their own culture. When about 6 months have passed, they finally start to get comfortable in their new place. It is said that it takes a year to fully get used to a new culture. By this time, they think of the foreign culture as their own culture.
What is even more interesting is that most students who study abroad experience culture shock when they return to their own country because they have been used to the foreign culture. This proves that even the common things could cause culture shock a few years later.

The Semmering Railway is famous for being the first railway to cross the Alps with the highest slope in Europe. Nowadays, the railway is famous for its remarkable structures and beautiful landscape. Many tourists from all over the world visit Austria to enjoy the railway. Karl Ritter was the man who started the construction of the Semmering Railway. His skills have been praised for more than 150 years.
Karl Ritter was an engineer who designed the railway, but he was not a railway engineer originally. When he was forty years old, he studied in the US for 1 year because of its advanced engineering technology at that time.
The Austrian government had a hard time to construct the railway in the Alps because it was extremely difficult and no one had accomplished it before. But Karl submitted his idea to the government that fully used locomotive technology. It took time to get accepted. The government was not sure how to start with something that had not been done before. But in the end, they accepted his idea. The 1848 revolution was enough reason to make the decision. With people’s high needs and expectations, the Semmering Railway project was started in 1848.

PART B_2

There are a lot of great inventors who have not been famous in the world. Karl Ritter von Ghega is one of them.
He was the man who designed the Semmering Railway in Austria. This railway is famous for being the first railway constructed through the Alps. This construction project was a challenge because of the steep slopes and high areas in the location.
When Karl Ritter von Ghega was 18 years old, he began his career as a railway engineer. To improve his skills and knowledge, he traveled to the USA for a year because the country had the most advanced engineering technology at that time.
The Austrian government had a hard time to approve the construction of the Semmering Railway because constructing a railway in high mountains, like the Alps, was extremely difficult. So, Karl submitted a plan that would make the most of locomotive technology to the government. It took time for them to accept his proposal because nothing like this was ever accomplished before. In the end, the government accepted his proposal because the revolution in 1848 was enough reason to make the decision. With people’s needs and expectations, the construction of Semmering Railway started in 1848.

This railway not only connected Vienna to Trieste for traveling purposes, but also allowed people to do business. The said railway has been a remarkable project in the field of engineering up to this time.
