Business Trip

My alarm clock rang at exactly three in the morning. I slept for only 4 hours since I had to finish my presentation. I felt a little nervous but I momentarily forgot about it when I saw a kid running after his rolling ball at the airport. An old lady stood near where the ball stopped and she gave it back to the kid. The young boy held it tight.
I’ve come to realize that second chances are possible but rare. I should be spending more time preparing than worrying about what might go wrong. I must give it my best shot because this trip may open doors of opportunities in the future.

ANNOUNCEMENT READING 1

Please read aloud the following announcement.

READ

Renewal of access cards
This is to inform that all student tenants of the dormitory are required to renew their access cards due to security purposes.
All student tenants need to surrender their current access cards to the admin office by June 30. After that day, students cannot enter the dormitory without the new access cards.
Please surrender your access cards during office hours. Our office is open during weekdays from 9:00-15:00.
Please note that a 50$ deposit is necessary in claiming your new access card.
Thank you for your understanding.

DIALOGUE READING 1

Please read aloud the following dialogue with your tutor.
Your tutor will read the female student’s part, and you will read the male student’s part.

READ

Female:
Hello, did you see the announcement about the access
card renewal?
Male:
Yes, I did. I don’t think it’s a good idea.
Female:
Why do you think so?
Male:
First of all, they informed us too late. It’s already June 25 and we have classes during weekdays. We need to arrange our schedule before going to the admin office since they are only open from 9:00-15:00 on weekdays.
Female:
True. I need to check my class schedule before going to
the admin office.
Male:
Right? They should open their office during weekends, so students can pick up their new access cards in their free time.
Female:
I agree. We don’t have classes during weekends.
Male:
Also, the required deposit is expensive for us. How many of us can prepare 50$ in 5 days? They should have consulted us before requiring any payment.
Female:
You are right. But we can still find ways to prepare $50 by June 30.
Male:
Yeah, I may ask for money from my sister. Nonetheless, I will ask the admin office to hear from us before making a new regulation next time.

QUESTION

The man expresses his opinion about the admin’s announcement.
State his opinion and explain his reasons.

We will check the sample answers. Please repeat after me.

SAMPLE ANSWERS

A female student and a male student are talking about an announcement made by the admin office.
According to the announcement, all student tenants are required to renew their dormitory access cards by June 30 due to security purposes.
The male student disagrees with the admin’s announcement and gives two reasons why he is against it.
First, he thinks that it’s too late to inform students 5 days before the due date. He defends that they should open the admin office on weekends because students have classes during weekdays.
Second, he adds that the 50$ deposit is expensive. He complains that the admin should hear from students before they require any payments from them.
For these reasons, he doesn’t support the announcement of the admin office.

ANNOUNCEMENT READING 2

Please read aloud the following announcement.

READ

This is to notify everyone about the cafeteria renovation.
To expand space and improve students’ convenience, we will renovate the cafeteria from September 3 – September 30. On these dates, students will not be able to enter the cafeteria. In line with this, the management will provide 2 food trucks on weekdays at 11:30-13:30.
We also advise students to bring their own lunch because the food trucks will have limited food supply.
Should you have any questions please feel free to contact the management office.
Sorry for the inconvenience and we appreciate your patience.

DIALOGUE READING 2

Please read aloud the following dialogue with your tutor.
Your tutor will read the female student’s part, and you will read the male student’s part.

READ

Female:
Hi, have you seen the announcement about the
cafeteria renovation?
Male:
Yes, I saw it this morning. I don’t like it.
Female:
Why don’t you like it?
Male:
First, it says that they will renovate the cafeteria to improve students’ convenience, won’t they?
Female:
Yes, they will.
Male:
Closing the cafeteria for a month will be more inconvenient than our current situation because we only have one cafeteria in this college. I also think it has enough space already.
Female:
That’s true.
We haven’t had a hard time finding a space in the cafeteria.
Male:
Also, it’s unrealistic. I don’t think two food trucks could cater enough foods to all 600 students in this college. They said the foods are in limited supply, it means students who have classes before lunch time won’t be able to buy food.
Female:
Yeah, that would be a problem because I have morning classes every day.
Male:
It means almost everyone needs to bring lunch every day. I will ask them to have more food trucks to cater to all the students. I hope they grant my request.

QUESTION

The man expresses his opinion on the management’s decision.
State his opinion and explain his reasons.

You have 30 seconds for preparation before answering.

It is said that humans might be replaced by robots in the future because of the continuous innovation in AI (Artificial Intelligence). Basically, there are two types of jobs: one is where the AI is superior and the other one is where humans are superior.
The AI is good at dealing with enormous amounts of data. What the AI can do is store vast information and accumulate data. When it comes to the quantity of data, the AI is superior to humans.
On the other hand, humans have the ability to connect information, so they can come up with new ideas from scratch.

Technology has improved drastically over the years. Some dangerous jobs that people do can be done with the help of AI in the future. With that, people would not have to put themselves at risk while working. On the other hand, some people worry that the AI might steal their jobs which would lead to an increase of unemployment rate. Now, I will talk about jobs that AI and humans can do better, respectively.
Let’s start with what AI can do better. One developer made a formula that could evaluate written essays by high school students. Its evaluation is the same as how human teachers evaluate students. Teachers may read ten thousand essays in their entire career, but AI is capable of reading millions of essays in a few minutes. Compared to humans, AI is more efficient in dealing with enormous amounts of data.
As for what humans can do better than AI, we can assess data even without any previous experience. In other words, AI can’t deal with data that it has never encountered before. But we, humans, can connect information and derive new ideas.
When we understand our strengths and weaknesses, you would know how we can handle the concern ” the AI might steal their jobs”.
