PART B_2

Charles E. McJilton was an exchange student in Tokyo in 1991. When the economy went down, there were a lot of people who could not find a job. As a result, some men became alcoholics. He believed that these people could still change and that it was never too late to start a new life.
During those years, poverty was a big problem in Japan. In fact, there were about 2.3 million people who did not have access to safe and nutritious food.
He knew that it was difficult to get off the street if people do not have the right tools. So, he offered the homeless a place for them to take a shower and keep their things which he called the self-help center. However, he felt that it was not enough. He realized that he had the knowledge about homelessness, but lacked the heart to understand it.

In 1997, he lived in a cardboard house along the Sumida River for three months. He was able to see the world with the eyes of a homeless person. Finally, he understood how it felt to be a homeless person. He was also able to see people who do not have enough money to feed themselves, still they did not lose their hope. These experiences changed the way he saw life.

Protecting Animals
Human activities have been one of the main reasons for the decreasing number of different species in the world. Human activities are often harmful and damaging to the animals’ natural environment and their way of life.
There are about two million species on the planet, 200 to 2,000 species of animals die off each year. Bees and elephants are two of the many endangered animals. Let us first talk about bees. Bees are important for humans and the environment most especially in food production. Almost 90 percent of all plants depend on bees for their production. If plants and crops fail to produce plants and seeds, food production would be at risk. This may lead to a food shortage. Now, let us talk about elephants. The number of elephants in Africa has declined from 10 million in the year 1930 to 5,000 today. While in Asia, it decreased from 200,000 to 40,000. Illegal hunting has been the number one cause of their population decrease.
Humans should take action before they miss the boat. Even ordinary people could help in saving endangered animals like bees and elephants. For instance, they can plant flowers in their garden like daisies and marigolds which bloom independently. This way, it would be easier for the bees to collect their food. If people save bees from dying, food production would not be at risk. Meanwhile, people should speak up against illegal hunting to save elephants. This could put pressure on the government to establish laws that would strictly prohibit any kinds of animal hunting. Another way to help elephants is by not supporting any establishments that abuse animals such as circuses.

The endangered language
Almost 125,000 Native Americans lived in the southeastern United States in 1830 but were forced to move west in 1838. During that time, many of them died while walking to Oklahoma. However, some Native Americans under the leader named Tsali refused to leave. After the fight, many soldiers were killed. Tsali was told that if he surrendered, others could live freely. So, he gave his life for others to be free. However, Cherokee which is their native language has become endangered because many children were not learning it.
Cherokee is just one of the many endangered languages in the world. Experts say that 50 percent of the world’s languages will be lost by the end of this century. One of the reasons for the loss of languages is when one country takes over another. The defeated country usually adopts the invader’s language. Also, some immigrants decide not to teach their native language to their children because they think fewer opportunities will be given to them.
Languages make each culture unique so they should be protected and shared to the future generations.

Teachers often use literature for language learning. Through reading books, students learn new information that could be used in their everyday lives. They learn new vocabulary and how to use them in a sentence. Literature also helps them improve their reading and writing skills.
Literature is also a tool to teach children how to deal with and understand their feelings and of other people. Most children’s books show characters that are kind and generous. Children copy what they usually see, so by reading these kinds of stories, they learn how to be kind. This way, they could build a good relationship with the people around them. So, teachers and parents should not get tired of doing their part by helping children see the value of literature.
