Encouragement Styles

There are different encouragement styles. Two of the most common encouragement styles are praising others for their achievements and giving constructive criticisms. These two styles are opposites.

The first encouragement style is common in American culture. Most Americans praise their children to make them stay positive and try even harder. They start by talking about the good things that their children have done. Then, they tell their children how they can improve their weaknesses. On the other hand, most Japanese people use the second encouragement style. Instead of giving praises, they use criticism to push their children to do better. They believe praises will make their children become overconfident and stop improving themselves.
