Max:
At least, you still get to talk with him sometimes. I wish could see my childhood best friend too. I miss her so much.

The Five-Storied Pagoda of Kofukuji Temple is located in Nara Park. It was built by the Fujiwara family in the year 710. The temple is considered as one of the “Four Great Temples” of Nara. The Kofukuji National Treasure Museum stands in its temple grounds where people can find the Ashura, one of the best-known Buddhist statues in Japan.
In the year 734, Empress Komyo established a hall that consists of 28 statues to remember her mother. One of them is the Hachibushu, the protectors of Buddha. Some stories say that Ashura was a cruel warrior. However, a few years later, he woke up and saw the truth. So, he repented and became a protector, too.
Over the centuries, many of the buildings and statues at Kofukuji Temple have been destroyed by fire, war, and natural disasters. Still, Ashura, along with other Hachibushu, have survived. It is known that one of the reasons for their survival is that they are very light. So, they could be easily carried out in times of emergency.

To build these light statues, they used the dakkastsu kanshitu method which means dry lacquer. It was introduced by a Korean artist who is also believed to be the creator of Ashura.

Irena Sendler helped Jewish children escape from the ghettos. One day, she hid a little girl under the back seat of her car. She told the girl to be silent. However, the girl was very sick. As they were leaving the ghetto, they were stopped by some Nazi soldiers. The little girl started coughing while the soldier was checking the car. So, Irena started coughing loudly. The soldier looked very concerned for Irena. He told her to see a doctor as she might have caught a bad disease from the Jews. Fortunately, Irena was able to escape safely with the little girl.
In 1943, Irena was arrested by the Nazis. They tortured her and asked about the Jewish children she helped escape. Despite all the pain, she remained silent. Irena’s friends were able to save her from that situation. One of her guards agreed to let her escape in exchange for money. Then, she was hidden for safety but it did not stop her from helping the Jews.
The Jewish children she was able to save were taken to religious institutions and Polish families where they were given false identities. These children consider Irena as their hero.

PART B_2

A language allows people to see the world in a special way. When a language is lost, the unique culture which preserves its ancient wisdom is also lost.
In English, 25% of the words are verbs, but in Cherokee there are over 75% verbs. Explaining how people act is what makes Cherokee unique. It tells what is happening, who is acting and to what or whom the action is being done. In 1821, a Cherokee scholar introduced the writing system which protected the language. However, written documents are not enough to preserve the language. People should use the language to communicate in order to preserve it.
To keep their language alive, the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians are using Cherokee for daily communication and discussions. They also started an immersion program for high school students that requires them to speak Cherokee before they can graduate. The program is also available in computer programs by using an application that allows people to type in Cherokee letters.

For the Cherokee, preserving their language is important. A Cherokee chief once said that people should not forget the Cherokee’s legacy by letting the language die with people who use it. It should be passed on to let its history be known to future generations.

PART A_3

I am ________________. Nice to meet you.

PART A_4

Nice to meet you too, ________________. Let’s begin our lesson!

PART B_1

Now, we will read aloud the dialogue below. After reading it once, we will switch roles.

PART B_2

Female: Our school club teacher told us that we have a meeting today at 5 p.m. after school. But I have a part-time job after school.
Male: Oh no! What are you planning to do?
Female: I don’t know. I’m so confused now.
Male: Why don’t you tell your school club teacher that you can’t attend the meeting because you have a part-time job? You may just ask other members about what happened in the meeting. I’m sure she will understand.
Female: I don’t think that will work because I am the secretary. I need to take notes during the meeting. No one will take notes if I don’t attend the meeting.
Male: Then, why don’t you ask permission from your boss to take a day off from your part-time job? Just explain your reason. For sure she will allow you.
Female: I already took a day off last Tuesday. We are only allowed to have a day off once a week. I don’t think that would be possible.
Male: That’s really difficult. But don’t worry, for sure you can think of ways on how you can solve your problem.

PART B_3

I will ask the following questions. Please answer based on the dialogue by following the format. I will check if your sentences are complete and if the grammar is correct.

PART B_6

PART B_7

Now, we’ll read the sample answer. Please repeat after me.

PART B_8

1. The female student and the male student are talking about a problem the female student is facing.
2. The problem is that the female student has to attend the school club meeting after school but she has a part-time job.
3. The male student offers two solutions to solve her problem. His first solution is to tell her school club teacher that she can’t attend the meeting and ask someone from the club about what happened in the meeting.
4. His second solution is to ask permission from her boss to take a day off and explain her reason.
5. I agree with the first solution because I think her school club teacher will understand that she needs to be at her part-time job. Also, I think someone from the club can take the notes for her. The female student mentioned that they are only allowed to have one day off per week, and she had already used it. So, I don’t think it would be possible to ask for another day off.
PART C_1

Now, we will read aloud the dialogue below. After reading it once, we will switch roles.

PART C_2

Female: Hi, Billy. Have you heard the announcement about the new library rule? I think it is really unfair for the students.
Male: No, I haven’t. What is it about?
Female: They said that students are only allowed to borrow a book for three days. I think three days is really such a short time. I don’t know what to do because I am currently doing research for my science project. I badly need to borrow books from the library.
Male: We can still borrow books inside the library, right? So, why not make our assignment inside the library? Many students do that. Besides, the library is a good place to study.
Female: I don’t think that would be possible for me because I usually can’t concentrate if there are a lot of people around me. I prefer studying at home.
Male: Then maybe you can try to search for articles online while doing your research at home? That would be helpful, too.
Female: Some articles online are not that reliable. I think using books would still be the best option.
Male: I guess you can’t really do much about it but to choose the best possible option.

PART C_3

I will ask the following questions. Please answer based on the dialogue by following the format. I will check if your sentences are complete and if the grammar is correct.

1. The female student and the male student are talking about a problem the female student has.
2. The problem is that the female student is currently conducting research for her science project and badly needs the books from the library. However, the library only allows students to borrow books for three days.
3. The male student offers two solutions to solve her problem. His first solution is to do her research inside the library.
4. His second solution is to research for articles online while doing her research at home.
5. I agree with the first solution because the library is a place for students to study. Although the female student cannot concentrate while there are many people, I think other students would not cause distraction because they are also busy studying.
