Not having a lot of body hair is the best way to lose heat. Professor Peter Wheeler claimed that this is why humans are “naked apes”: the lack of hair allows them to avoid overheating. Early humans, on the other hand, could have lost their hair if they had an alternative system of keeping warm at night. A system like this is provided by fire. Once our ancestors learned to handle fire, they were able to keep warm even while asleep.

The significant benefit of body hair loss may have made humans better at traveling large distances during hot weather compared to most animals. They could only run long distances when hunting for prey. The control of fire improved humans’ ability to run long distances by allowing body hair to be lost. They are also better at hunting and stealing meat from rival species.
