PART B_2

Aside from being safer than normal cars, self-driving vehicles would make traffic flow more smoothly. They would not brake unpredictably, could be routed to avoid crowded roads, and could travel close together. These factors would increase road capacity.

Researchers of the University of Texas estimate that if 90% of cars in the US were self-driving, it would be equivalent to a doubling of road capacity. Moreover, delays would be cut by 60% on motorways and 15% on suburban roads. Productivity gains would be worth 1.3% trillion a year in the US alone, and $5.6 million worldwide. With cars in constant use, much less parking space would be needed. Autonomous vehicles would allow more people to live in city centers; however, they would also make it easier for workers to live farther out.

In a future without drivers, people will come to wonder why they tolerated high rates of road accidents and why they spent so much money on machines that are barely sat on. Self-driving cars may seem strange now, but future generations may look back on the age of car ownership as much stranger.

PART B_2

Save Washington Square Park!
New York City official Robert Moses announced his highway plan in 1952. But Shirley Hayes, mother of four children, established a protest committee upon learning of this. Jane Jacobs joined, and together they stood up against Moses.

The committee members set up tables near Washington Square Park and asked visitors to sign a petition to stop the highway construction. Some children even joined the committee meeting with their parents and put up protest posters that read, “Save the Square!”

Professional city planners believed that modern highway systems and high-rises were the keys to building a lively city. Jane, however, thought differently. From her observation, a city works best when there is rich interaction among its residents. It was the people that made a city lively, not the cars. Jane’s original views captured the hearts of many, including former First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt, eventually winning her support. In November 1958, after six years of protest, Jane and the other campaign members won against Moses: New York City had closed Washington Square Park to traffic.

Jane passed away in 2006, but her powerful message to “get out and walk” lives on to inspire people to act in their unique way.

Gaudi and His Messenger
The world-famous church in Barcelona, Spain, the Sagrada Familia, has been under construction for more than a century since 1882. Antonio Gaudi designed the church, but he did not stick to the original plan and changed the model drastically. Gaudi had poor health as a child and spent most of his childhood observing nature around him instead of playing outside. This experience had a great influence on his art.

Gaudi devoted the latter half of his life to Sagrada Familia’s construction and wanted to create a structurally perfect and beautiful church. His designs and models, however, were no longer used in construction after his death because they were destroyed during the Spanish Civil War. Gaudi’s students instead drew the designs based on what they heard from him.

Seven of Gaudi’s works were declared World Heritage Sites by UNESCO between 1984 and 2005. Among them was “The Nativity Facade,” which was completed in 2000 with a sculpture of 15 angels by the Japanese sculptor Etsuro Sotoo. He has been working on the Sagrada Familia for more than 40 years. According to Sotoo, “Gaudi was happy when he spent his younger days surrounded by nature. Therefore, he thought nature could make us happy.” With Gaudi’s will in mind, Sotoo and his colleagues continue to carve stone in Barcelona.

MANAGEMENT PHILOSOPHY: THE X AND Y THEORIES BY DOUGLAS MCGREGOR

According to Douglas McGregor, there are two aspects of human behavior at work: Theory X (negative) and Theory Y (positive). In principle, the assumption of Theory X is the employees’ pessimism at work whereas Theory Y is perceiving their work as relaxing and normal. McGregor views Theory Y as a more reasonable approach than the other, thus companies are encouraged to use this theory’s technique for employees to exercise self-direction and decentralization of authority. Using the carrot and stick method can also be applied.

Complimenting workers is also a cornerstone of success. It does not only make them feel motivated but also gives them a sense of “humanity,” that the company sees them as people and not machines. An act of gratitude will surely get them at the top of their game.

Listen to their voices and respond appropriately in a genuine manner. Demonstrate sincerity when engaging in conversations with your employees and avoid going through the motions at all costs.

May
Naomi, I’ve been wondering for a while now. Do you think our company has insurance?
Naomi
Not that I know of. Why?
May
A few weeks ago, I read an article about business security. There was a freight company that suffered heavy losses after one of its vehicles malfunctioned and got caught in a road accident.
Naomi
That’s a frightening thought. How much did the company lose?
May
If I recall correctly, it was about $3 million.
Naomi
That’s a huge amount for a single accident!
May
I agree, and it was unforeseen, too. So I just think that our company should take out insurance on its assets.
Naomi
I agree, especially since we work in a tech company. There’s a risk of fire breaking out.
May
That’s true. We may never know when a short circuit incident may happen, and it’s not only the equipment but the office itself.
Naomi
Yes, because external factors can cause damage to our company property, too. And I can see that insurance has a lot of benefits not only to our safety.
May
Oh, definitely. For instance, property insurance can safeguard us against financial losses, like what happened to the freight company.
Naomi
And the company doesn’t need to pay for any physical damages. Insurance providers can help businesses quickly recover from losses from what I know.
May
Businesses can easily file a claim for that. I hope our company has one or if not, at least consider it.
Naomi
Perhaps we can raise it in the next meeting.

PROPOSAL TO IMPROVE ENGAGEMENT RATE IN NEPTUNE NETWORK

The engagement rate of our online advertisement has decreased by 13% this month. This 4% reduction in 30 days is alarming and needs to be addressed ASAP to prevent the risk of a downturn in the long run.

Engagement rate gives our company an accurate and clear picture of our competition, hence it should not be taken lightly. If the decreasing rate continues, the company could suffer from being surpassed by our competitors. Moreover, we run the risk of gaining a negative impression in the market.

Therefore, the Marketing Department must treat this as a matter of urgency. Creating a more dynamic website with multidimensional content is a plausible solution to this. Revising the best practices may also be done if necessary.

PART B_2
Jessie
Good day, James. Since our advertising campaign is about to begin, let’s cover the bases to avoid risks. Have you seen anything that can pose a threat?
James
The first thing that comes to mind is market research. We could run the risk of going over budget.
Jessie
Could you elaborate on that?
James
If we have limited volunteers and the like, the advertising campaign may be ineffective.
Jessie
How much do you think we would lose?
James
Based on my estimates, we could lose a ballpark figure of $100,000. This includes the extra costs for extended research in case the advertising campaign becomes inefficient.
Jessie
That’s quite a loss. What’s the probability of this happening?
James
Quite high, I’m afraid. Our competitors have already released their products so our target consumers may not be so interested anymore.
Jessie
I see. What course of action should we take?
James
I suggest continuing research during the production phase. We may soften the blow this way, and we could see any real-time changes in the market demand.
Jessie
That’s a plausible resolution. Thank you, James. I’ll take note of everything.

Electronics manufacturing supply chain risk prevention

Several key factors can threaten the supply chain of electronics manufacturing. One is natural disasters. From delivery pauses and delays to supply and demand inconsistency caused by natural calamities, they can induce a devastating effect on the supply chain. The true impact of natural disasters is generally unpredictable, which is why we must come up with plans to mitigate the risks. First, we must develop 1.) a disaster preparedness plan and 2.) a recovery process. These will provide detailed guidelines for everyone responsible for the shipment. Another course of action in risk reduction is maintaining consistent contact with the external suppliers. We have to ensure that the other party has robust procedures to analyze the risks, avoid possible problems during shipment, and moderate the consequences of unforeseen incidents.

Hi, Claude. How was the CSR discussion?
Claude
It went well. Everyone agreed with Julian’s proposal.
Esther
What type of CSR did he go with?
Claude
Philanthropic, something we truly need nowadays.
Esther
I agree. Care to fill me in on the details?
Claude
The backbone of his plan is food with a bit of social media.
Esther
I’m interested to know how that will work.
Claude
Well, social media has been our strong suit, so donating to food banks based on the number of our page’s Facebook post reactions is a surefire way for the CSR to work.
Esther
I never thought of it that way!
Claude
Me neither. Not only that, implementing this doesn’t only benefit the CSR, but brand marketing and social awareness as well.
Esther
Better give props to Julian for coming up with something as genius as that.
Claude
Oh, definitely. The newbie will surely go a long way. Hopefully, our CSR makes a difference in our society. Anyway, we require your presence in the next meeting for the CSR. We need your help with the planning.
