Let’s read the dialogue. I will play Ron and you will play Emma. Then, we’ll switch roles.
PART B_2

Hi Emma, you’ve been as busy as a bee. What have you been up to?
Well, I’ve been attending cram school again. I failed an exam last month.
I thought I should push myself to study harder by going to cram school.

Oh, I see. But you passed all your exams this month, right? That’s a real improvement! I can already see your progress.
Thanks, Ron. Maybe I just got lucky. I can’t be complacent, especially
that we are in our final year in high school.

Oh, you’re right. And we only have a few more weeks left to study for another batch of exams.
That’s true. I get butterflies in my stomach just by thinking about that.

Well, we just have to keep going until it’s all done. As you said, we’re in our final year. Can’t wait to celebrate!
That’s a motivating way of looking at things. I miss playing video
games though. If only I can play games all night and still get a high
score in my exam tomorrow…

When pigs fly! Don’t worry, we’ll play video games until we numb our fingers after finishing our exams.
Now, I have something to look forward to!

video

Deeply Disturbing
Nowadays, it is easy to be fooled by disinformation and deepfake videos because of AI advancements. But the US government has begun combating this social media-deception, taking it as a matter of national security.

University of Washington’s researchers took Obama’s speaking and altered a video to make it seem like he said the same thing but at a different time and place. A different altered video also surfaced when researchers from Stanford University transferred the head position, expression, and eye gaze of the man and applied them to the woman. These are called deepfake: edited videos that look real and are difficult to tell if they are fake or not. In the deepfake Obama video, his lips were digitally altered, with Jordan Peele providing the voice. Such videos are perfectly able to confuse, disrupt, and intensify anger in any aspect from business to foreign policy to politics.

In the years following the 2016 election campaign, many other fakes were shared all over the internet, such as photos of Hilary Clinton and Donald Trump stirring anger and provoking one side or the other. Detecting fakes like these is what SRI and the government’s Defense Advanced Research Agency do. They use artificial intelligence to teach computers how to detect fakes and be one step ahead of deepfake technology.

Shoppers are discovering the joys of secondhand stores. Only people short on cash used to frequent such shops. Now ordinary shoppers are hunting for used bargains. And the shops sell not just clothing and kitchen supplies, but also audio equipment, musical instruments, and computers. What’s more, all products are tested by shop employees. If customers are not happy with an item, they have 30 days to return it. “We spent a lot on shelves, lighting, and layout to make our store look nicer than a typical secondhand store,” said the owner of Nine Lives, a secondhand store in New York. “The atmosphere and the quality of the products are like a real department store,” said one regular Nine Lives customer. Let’s read the dialogue. I will play Ron and you will play Emma. Then, we’ll switch roles.
PART B_2

Emma, which do you prefer? Watching our friends play video games or watching a baseball game on TV?
Hmm, probably the latter. It makes me feel more like a spectator. How about you?

Well, watching our friends play video games is more entertaining for me! Have you seen our friends play Mario Kart? They were neck and neck.
There’s a lot of shouting and it always ends up in a fight.

I don’t mind! The loser always buys the dinner anyway!
Well, that’s one good thing.

By the way, our friends are going to live stream their game on YouTube!
Are you serious? You mean anyone can watch?

Yes! That’s how they make money nowadays. Basically, gamers can live-stream themselves narrating their way through games and attract fans worldwide!
That’s pretty awesome, I must admit.
But with their crazy antics, there’s a fat chance that they would gain
online followers!

I have to disagree! Their crazy antics would make people watch their videos!
Well, let’s wait and see.
