Colors have been an essential factor in film making. They are an important visual tool to narrate stories. Filmmakers usually create a specific color palette that will be used for the entire film. They believe that the use of different colors in movies creates a dramatic impact on viewers. They also affect how people perceive the story. Two of the many reasons why colors are important in films are because they simplify the story and they help viewers understand the emotions in the story.
Now, let’s discuss how colors can simplify the story. One of the goals of every filmmaker is to provide information without the use of words. So, they use specific tints and tones to tell the setting of a story. Filmmakers often use blue to show winter or night. Warm orange suggests autumn. While monochromes are usually used for flashbacks. These colors and distinctive tones help people follow the shift of the stories.
Most filmmakers would agree that emotions can still be expressed even without any words. Colorists do color grading to adjust the colors in every frame by adding or removing colors. This way, they can help viewers deeply understand the emotions of the characters. For example, the character is feeling depressed. To communicate this emotion, the colorist will lower the saturation to make the frame look duller. Dull colors represent grief, sorrow, and the likes.

A lot of people would agree that beauty is all about preference. However, have you ever wondered what influences our preferences? There are some researches that reveal some of the basic factors that affect how people see beauty. Two of them are averaging and facial symmetry which we will be tackling today.
Let us discuss the first factor which is averaging. It is the combination of different facial features of different people. Some researchers conducted a study on averaging. They created artificial faces through computers by combining several people’s facial features. This resulted in average faces which gained more positive feedback compared to faces that have unique facial features. This implies that a face that has mixed-race features looks more attractive for most people.
Now, let’s move on to the second factor. Facial symmetry is the specific measurement of the facial features. If the left side and the right side of a face look like each other, this is considered symmetrical. On the other hand, asymmetrical faces are usually associated with faces with abnormalities. Most people find symmetrical faces more attractive compared to asymmetrical faces. The “beauty is good” and “disfigured is bad” thinking of people might have a significant impact on how they appreciate beauty.
Despite all these factors, we should remember that the way people see beauty today may or may not change in the following years.

Are you aware of the autonomic nervous system? It is the part of the nervous system that works autonomously and controls certain body processes like blood pressure, pulse rate, and breathing. In this lesson, we will discuss the two main divisions of the autonomic nervous system which are the sympathetic and parasympathetic division.
Let’s start with the sympathetic division. This division prepares the body for stress and emergency situations. It automatically controls the body’s response to any noticed threats. This division is associated with the fight or flight response. The fight or flight response represents the options that people have when they are in danger. The options are dealing with the threat (fight) or running away to safety (flight). When someone is frightened, the heartbeat accelerates and the breathing becomes faster. This is to provide enough energy and oxygen to the body as it responses to danger.
Next, the parasympathetic division. This division keeps the body at rest. This division is responsible for storing and conserving the body’s energy not for immediate but for future use. It slows down the pulse rate and starts the digestion. This division is associated with the rest and digest function. The rest and digest represents the time when the blood pressure decreases, the pulse rate slows down and the digestion starts as the body is at rest. It controls the body processes during ordinary situations. For example, wanting to relax on a weekend while watching your favorite television show on a comfortable chair calls for the rest and digest function.

Jose Rizal is one of the greatest Filipino heroes. He was born during the period of Spanish rule in the Philippines. Unlike other heroes, Rizal fought for his country without the use of violence. He wrote novels, essays, and articles that inspired the Filipino people to start a revolution against the Spanish government. As a result, the Spanish government sentenced him to death in Bagumbayan, Manila on December 30, 1896. Nicky: Have you read the news article about our country planning to use wind energy?
Kevin: Yes, I read the news article yesterday. It says that wind energy will be used to provide energy for the whole country. Do you think it is a good idea?
Nicky: I think it is good. I hope they could make it happen as soon as possible.
Kevin: I hope so. Also, wind energy does not cause pollution that could harm the environment.
Nicky: That’s right. But it is not easy to keep up with wind to provide energy for the whole country.
Kevin: That’s a good point. We cannot always predict the weather. Just like today, it is not very windy.
Nicky: Yes. That is why our country uses natural fuel. It is also cheaper than managing wind energy.
Kevin: You’re correct. Anyway, I hope wind energy could still be considered to improve our environment for future generations.
